A slice is nice
The fish is sold as boneless fillets, either plain or pre-marinated in Italian, Lemon Pepper, and Cajun flavours.
This little fishy went to market
U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish is generally available at the fresh fish counter of every major and mid-sized grocery chain in Ontario. It is also sold at seafood markets and is increasingly appearing on restaurant menus across Canada.
Tasting is believing
This fish is mild tasting and slightly sweet. It has a firm texture that lends itself to all cooking preparations, including grilling.
The price is right
Because U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish is harvested every day of the year, it is always available at a consistent price. A mid-priced fish, the fresh, never frozen fillets sells for around $1.25-$1.75 per 100 grams or $5.99-$7.99 per pound.
Now that’s fresh
One of the freshest fish available in Canada, U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish is shipped from processors to Canada arriving on dinner plates only days after it left the pond. The ponds and processing plants in the southern U.S. are closer to southern Ontario than the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish is processed immediately upon harvesting, while ocean fishing fleets are often at sea for days, which can impact the freshness of the catch.
Keep on truckin’
The fish is transported live in aerated tanker trunks to nearby plants where they are processed in under 30 minutes. The fish is then shipped to Canada either fresh for retail sales or fresh or frozen for foodservice sales.
The skinny on feed
U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish feed only on floating grain pellets made from soybeans, corn, wheat, vitamins and minerals. Because these fish are surface-fed, it helps ensure a clean, mild-tasting and odourless fish.
The blue evolution
U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish are one of very few fish species to be endorsed by North America’s most prestigious environmental groups such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Audubon Society.
